لقد وجدت معارضة التفسير في بعض الدوائر الدينية المتشددة طوال الفترة الممتدة من نهاية القرن الأول للهجرة إلى القرن الثالث، (بل ربما إلى أبعد من ذلك).
ولقد كانت الدواعي والأسباب مختلفة أشد الإختلاف، وهكذا فإنه لا شك بأن الرجال الأتقياء مثل أبي وائل شقيق ابن سلمة كانت توجد لديهم أسباب اخرى غير تلك التي تصدر عن النظريات النقدية للحديث الصحيح عن رجال من نحو أحمد بن حنبل الذي كان يرد التفسير كعلم معترف به، وعالم اللغة من نحو الأصمعي توجد له كذلك أسباب يمليها عليه موقفه الشخصي، غير أن حركة المقاومة ضد التفسير إنما كان يحدثها أساساً أهل التقوى المخالفون للعقلانية على غرار ما نصادفهم في العالم بأسره، إلا أن غولدتسيهر تناول هذه المسألة من زاوية خاطئة.
فلم يكن قادراً أن يفهم التقوى التي تعارض على نحو متعصب كل تأويل للكلام المقدس، ثم إنه لم يفهم بأن هذا الإتجاه في التقوى كان معارضاً للمسلك الذي يمثله رجال من نحو ابن عباس، وبالإجمال إنه لم يفهم المعارضة الداخلية العميقة الموجودة في صحيح الإسلام الأولين، وبإعتراف الجميع يبدو أن ابن عباس نفسه لم يتعرض للطعن، غير أنه وجدت معارضة ضد إتباعه وتلامذته، وعلى الأقل فإن معظم هؤلاء، بالرغم من معارضة سنية أقلية متطرفة من معارضيه، كانت لهم شهرة منعتهم من إدانة الأجيال اللاحقة، وبدلاً من ذلك فإن الصورة المعطاة لهم كانت إلى حد ما قد تحولت تحت تأثير المناصرين الأواخر لمعارضة التفسير والذي أضل غولدتسيهر وأربكه جزئياً وهذا هو بالضبط، كون أن مصادر السيرة - وقبل كل شيء الوافدي، وابن سعد، تقدم بعض الأحاديث المتحيزة لدوائر معارضة لتفسير.
