كان أبو نصر عبد الله بن علي بن محمد بن يحيى السراج، مؤلف كتاب اللمع، من أهالي طوس، كان معلموه هم جعفر الخلدي وأبو بكر محمد بن داود الدقي وأحمد ابن محمد السايح.
كانت العائلة التي ينتمي إليها مشهورة بالزهد، كان أبو نصر سنياً متحمساً، لكن رغم أنّه أسّس نفسه على معرفة الشريعة كان عالماً باللاهوت (الفقه) الصوفي وكان الصوفيون يعتبرونه نصيراً موثوقاً لمذاهبهم، كان ممجداً من بين أبناء بلده لأجل نبل روحه.
غن كانت اللمع يمكن بصعوبة أن نسميه عملاً أصلياً بمعنى أنه يعالج نظريات المؤلف وتأملاته حول موضوع الصوفية، في الأغلب، إنه يحصر نفسه بتوين وتفسير كلمات أسلافه المحكية أو المكتوبة، ويوبّخ الكتاب المعاصرين من أجل النقاشات التفاخرية التي انغمسوا فيها.
من وجهة النظر التاريخيّة، يلقى تحفظه ترحيباً، يكشف الكتاب عن المجموعة التي لا تقدر بثمن من الوثائق التي قام (السرّاج) بجمعها وترتيبها، وهي وثائق لا يمكن في كثير من الحالات العثور عليها في أي مكان آخر، توضح التطور المبكر للتصوف الإسلامي وتمكننا من دراسة اللغة والأفكار والطرق أثناء زمن المراهقة الحرج.
بتأمل تشكيلة الموضوعات التي نجح المؤلف في تضمينها في رسالة قصيرة نسبياً، يمكننا بسهولة أن نغفر له أنه غالباً ما طمس الإسنادات واختصر نص الأحاديث والحكايات، لكن لو منح نفسه حرية أكبر في العرض، لكان كتابه أكثر تنويراً حتى مما هو عليه.
ثمة مقاطع كثيرة لا يمكن أن يشرحها بشكل وافٍ سوى الصوفي فقط.
