الكتاب الذي بين أيدينا هو ثمرة بحث علمي أكاديمي، ويعود البناء الكامل للعرض والجزء الأكبر من المضمون إلى المحاضرات عن "تاريخ علم الكلام الإسلامي" ألقاها المؤلف بين عام 1981- 1991م.
تضمنت المحاضرات أفكاراً وردت في المحاضرات عن تاريخ الفقه الإسلامي وعن الفهم الإسلامي للمكان والزمان والمادة تساؤلات الأنثروبولوجيا (علم الإنسان) الثقافية وتطبيقها على البحث العلمي الإسلامي، وكذلك عن موضوع "التاريخ الإسلامي والبحث العلمي والأوروبي - المشاكل والمجادلات" ولقد دُعم إعداد هذه المحاضرات بحلقات بحث مخصصة لموضوع محدَّد لكنَّها مركزة على معالجة وجهات نظر منفردة، وبطبيعة الحال بأبحاث ذاتية.
إنَّ كتاب "تاريخ الفكر الإسلامي" هو، كما سيتبَّين منه فيما بعد، ليس ملتزماً بروح العصر التي تعتبر "الحوار" كل كلام متبادل، تصرُّفاً مفيداً يجلب الخلاص، لكن مقدماته وأهدافه تزداد غموضاً كُلَّما مورس أكثر أمام الرأي العام، بل إنَّ ما أبتغيه هو، فقط وحصراً، تقديم عرض واقعي عمَّا يمكن أن يُقال، حسب الوضع الحالي لمعارفنا وبواسطة طرائق البحث العلمي التاريخي اللغوي للمصادر الإسلامية ذات الصلة ومن عصور مختلفة، عن نظرة المسلمين إلى الله تعالى وإلى علاقته مع الإنسان، وأنا أتخلّى متعمداً عن التسرع في إظهار التشابهات بين الإسلام والمسيحية والذي يؤدي في العادة إلى الوقوع في الخطأ، إذ ما هي المعرفة التي نكتسبها إذا ما اعتبرنا المسيح، كما نقرأ في كثير من الاحيان، كلمه الله تعالى في القرآن الكريم؟ كثيراً ما يُحكى عن تطابقات بين الإسلام والمسيحية؛ وكثيراً ما يُقال للقارئ الأوروبي البسيط إنَّ الإسلام فيه ما يشبه تعاليم كلمة الله المسيحية.
لكن هذا غير صحيح على الإطلاق، وسعي المربين الدينيين إلى إيجاد، أو إختراع، عدد كبير، قدر الإمكان، من القواسم المشتركة بين الأديان لكن يخففوا من حدة التوترات بتحقيق نوع من الإنسجام السطحي، هو بالنسبة لي غير مفيد.
فهو يدلُّ على عدم إحترام الأشكال المختلفة للتدين ويشير إلى إستهتار لا يطاق، الأهم والأسلم هو التعرّف على الإختلافات القائمة مع العقيدة الأخرى والإعتراف بها أيضاً، ولهذا الهدف خصصت هذا الكتاب.
