الشعر في الصدر الأول من عصر الإسلام والدولة الاموية، يمثل عهد نضج الشعر في جماله وأصالته، وفحولة اللغة التي شيغ فيها، وطرافة الموضوعات التي طرقها الشعراء، وهو شعر خصب فخم جميل، وشعر عروة بن أذينة الليثي الكناني من جملة ذلك الشعر الرائق الرفيع، والعناية بشعر عروة وغيره من شعراء العصر، هي في حقيقتها عناية بتاريخ الأدب في هذه الفترة الحافلة، وحين يقيض لشعرهم أن يظهر مجموعًا محققًا، يمكن عندئذ أن تدرس هذه البيئة دراسة علمية صحيحة.
إن شعر عروة يكاد يكون مفقودًا ومجهولًا، لولا ما حفظه محمد بن المبارك ابن ميمون البغدادي صاحب منتهى الطلب، فقد جمع أكثر شعره، إذ حفظ له إحدى عشرة قصيدة طويلة في خمسمائة وتسعة وخمسين بيتا، وقد أضفت إلى هذا الشعر ما حفظته كتب الأدب واللغة والمعاجم والتاريخ، ويبلغ مائة واثنين وأربعين بيتا، غير الشعر المنسوب له ولغيره من الشعراء، إن رغبتي في جعل شعر عروة بين أيدي القراء والمعنيين بالدراسات الادبية وإحياء التراث العربي، وحمل أمانيه، جعلني ابذل الجهد الذي أطيقه والوقت الذي أملكه في سبيل إعداده.
