هدبة أول شاعر في تاريخ الادب العربي، يصور حياة السجن بتفصيل وتدقيق، فإذا كانت معلوماتنا عن السجن وحياة السجناء في العصور القديمة غامضة مشوشة، فإن هدبة يقدم وصفا واضحًا دقيقًا، فالسجين يعيش ايامه ولياليه الطويلة الحزينة، وسط غرفة ضيقة رطبة مظلمة، في بناء كبير محكم، فيه حديد مرصوص بالشيد والجندل، وله شرفات عالية للحراسة، ومراقب كثيرة، مرقب فوق مرقب، والباب ذخمة صفيقه محكمة، مضببة بسيور من حديد، ووقع أقدام الحارس الرتيبة من خلف الباب.
وقد كانت قصة هدبة وأخباره وشعره، موضع اعجاب الرواة والادباء، كانوا يحفظون شعره ويروون أخباره، وكان المصعب الزبيري يقول "كنا بالمدينة أهل البيوتات" اذا لم يكن عند أحدنا خبر هدبة وزيادة وأشعارهما ازدريناه، وكنا نرفع من قدر أخبارهما وأشعارهما ونعجب بهما" ذلك لأنهم وجدوا في قصة هدبة ومقتله وصبره، صورة حزينة تثير الشجون والعطف والأسى، ووجدوا في شعره لغة فصيحة عالية، وأسلوبًا جميلًا رائعًا، وموضوعات مثيرة مدهشة، وهذه الصفات وغيرها، جعلتني أحب هدبة وشعره، وانصرف لجمعه وتحقيقه، ونشرته منذ عشر سنوات مضت، ثم أعود إليه، محبًا له، شغوفًا له، مرة ثانية، لأجلوه لقرائه في حلة جديدة جميلة، آمل أن تنزل من قلوب وعقول المثقفين، ومحبي التراث، المنزلة المرجوة المأمولة.
