ن أتوقف كثيراً أمام أهوال وأشواق ونعيم وجحيم ما عاشه الاثنا عشر ضابطاً مصرياً من العُرابيين الذين تم نفيهم مع أُسرهم إلى مجاهل قلب أفريقيا، بهدف مُعلن هو «القيام بحملة عسكرية لنقل مؤن وعتاد عسكرى إلى (لادو) عاصمة (مديرية خط الاستواء) التابعة للحكم المصرى، ورفع قطاعات أعالى النيل الأبيض وقياس تصريفاته عند المنابع لاستكمال دراسة نظارة الأشغال والرى لإنشاء خزان جنوب أسوان»، أما الهدف الحقيقى الذى أضمره ودبره «السير أفلين وود» الذى عيَّنه الخديو توفيق سرداراً للجيش المصرى، فكان التخلص العاجل من هذا التجمهر الخطِر كى لا تشتعل الثورة من جديد، وإلحاقاً بهؤلاء الضباط الاثنى عشر تم تجميع ثلاثة عشر ألف جندى من جيش الثورة المهزومة، حملتهم السفن ـ على عجل ـ من ميناء السويس إلى ميناء سواكن، تاركين وراءهم القوات البريطانية ترتع على أرض الوطن، الوطن الذى لن يروه ثانية، وكأن حلم الحرية الذى داعب خيالهم يوماً، تحول إلى عقاب بالموت!
مسيرة ملحمية مضى فيها الاثنا عشر ضابطاً على سفنهم البخارية بصحبة أسرهم وجنودهم نحو منابع النيل حتى البحيرات العظمى، خاضوا مستنقعات وعبروا أحراشاً وشقَّت سفنهم مياهاً جارفة ضد تيار عارم وتحت شلالات مطر وبروق ورعود قيامية، شقوا دروبهم المغلقة بالأدغال بين قبائل من آكلى لحوم البشر، وكواسر مفترسة وأفاعٍ سامَّة، ورسوا على ضفافٍ خُضر بها ما لا عين رأت من آيات الجمال وعجيب الحيوان والطير والشجر والثمر، وخاضوا فى طريق الوفاء بمهمتهم حروباً مع عصابات وتجار رقيق مُدجَّجين بفتاوى أئمة كذبة وسهام وحراب مسمومة ومناجل لقطع الرؤوس، ولم تتخلف أفواه التماسيح فى مشاركة ذلك الضلال البشرى بقضم وابتلاع عديدين من أفراد هذه الحملة، ورغم ذلك لم يتراجع الضباط والجنود عن المضى فى تنفيذ المهمة التى كان أصعب أجزائها رفع مناسيب أعالى النيل وقياس تدفقات المياه، تحت هولٍ من مطر طوفانى وفوق عالم مائى لا يابسة له ولا أفق.
