The temples against which the prophet Ezekiel fulminated lie in ruinous abundance throughout the length and breadth of Lebanon. They perch on lofty crags, reached only by precipitous goat pathsp the lie strewn beneath stupendous cliffs, moist with the spray of foaming waterp they stand in the deep and sombre chade of great gnarled trees, the remnants of the sacred groves of the past.
Few countries can boast such a rich legacy from the ancient world. Lebanon's Roman temples - from the massive crations of Baalbek to the modest structures at Khirbet el-Knese - 'provide inexhaustible and absorbing material for the historian, the archaeologist, the architect, the astronomer, and the humble inquiring tourist'.
