الهدف الذي يسعى إليه هذا الكتاب هو التعريف بفكر آخر، قد يدهش القارئ كثيراً عندما يتبين أنه أكثر قرباً من فكرنا عما كان يظن، فالإنسان على اختلاف أجناسه وحضاراته هو الإنسان، يعيش بين الخوف والأمل، يستنكر الشر ويقدم عليه، كارهاً حينا وراغباً حينا آخر من هنا أهمية الأدب الذي يؤكد من خلال وصفه للنفس البشرية ما بيننا من وحدة وتشابه، أي أن الكتاب يود لو استطاع أن يسهم ولو قليلاً جداً في الحيلولة بين القارئ العربي والانعزالية الحضارية، التي رأينا خلال الاحتلال ا لعثماني ما أذاقتنا من وبال فبدون التأثر بالغير والتأثير عليهم لا يمكن لحضارة أن تزدهر.
لكن التعرف على فكر الآخرين لا يعني أبداً تبني هذا الفكر جملة، وإنما يعني دائماً الانتقاء والكتاب لا يبدي في تقديمه للأدب الألماني الإعجاب فقط وإنما التعجب، بل ولا يتردد أحياناً كثيرة في التعبير عن عجزه عن الفهم، محاولاً إشراك القارئ في البحث عن تفسير، ثم إن الآدب الراقي، على اختلاف الحضارات التي ينتمي إليها والعصور، لا يروج لمبادئ أو معتقدات، مثلما تفعل الفلسفة، وإنما غايته هي إيقاظ الضمير وإرهاف الحس، غاية الأدب هي الأدب، أي تهذيب النفس بمعناه الأعمق، وأخيراً فالكتاب يود أن يتيح للقارئ متعة فكرية من نوع خاص، ويحرص كثيراً على ألا يشعره بأدنى ملل، لذا اختار لنفسه أسلوباً هو أقرب إلى لغة الرواية منه إلى لغة النقد والتحليل.
