يقدم هذا الكتاب ثلاثين عرضا لأهم الأعمال التى انجزها الأدب الإنجليزى فى أربعة قرون. ولا نكتفى بإيجاز كل من هذه الأعمال، وإنما تقوم أيضاً بتعريف القارئ بالخلفية التاريخية والأجتكاعية والفلسفية لكل منها، ولأن لى أنا الآخر موقفى من العمل الذى أقدمه كل مرة، لا أتردد فى التعبير عن الإعجاب حينا وعن النقد حيناً آخر، لنا قد يبدو الكتاب للقارئ- رغم أنه يتناول ثلاثين عملا تختلف عن بعضها البعض كل الاختلاف- كوحدة فكرية متماسكة.
وقد سئلت بعد ظهور الجزء الأول الخاص بالأدب الألمانى عن السر فى أمتناعى عن الترجمة، غير اننى أدرك فى حقيقة الأمر اهمية الترجمة وحاجتنا الملحة إليها، لجوئى إلى الأسلوب الذى لجأت إليه يعبر عن إحساسى بأننا تقوقعنا طويلاً وأصابنا الجمود، وبأن المسافة بيننا وبين الغرب قد بعدت كثيراً، من هنا رغبتى فى تقديم أكبر قدر فى أقصر وقت، مع الحرص على أن يلم القارئ بالعديد من جوانب العمل الذى أقدمه، الحرص أيضا على أن تتحول القراءة إلى متعة فكرية.
