صدرت رواية «إمبراطور البرتغال» للروائية السويدية الشهيرة سلمى لاغرلوف عام 1914. وتدور أحداث الرواية في مقاطعة ڤارملاند، موطن سلمى لاغرلوف، بالقرب من الحدود مع النرويج، وذلك في منتصف القرن التاسع عشر تقريباً. وهي تروي قصّة الفلاح يان أندرسون- المقيم في عزبة سكروليكا- والذي «لن يملّ أو يتعب أبداً من الحديث عن ذلك اليوم الذي أتت فيه ابنته الصغيرة إلى هذا العالم»، والتي يحبّها أكثر من أي شيء آخر في الكون.
حين احتضن يان ابنته الوليدة للمرة الأولى أحس بشيء ينبض في صدره، ثمّ اكتشف أنّ في صدره قلباً لم يكن يشعر به من قبل. وقد امتلأ ذلك القلب فجأة بمشاعر الأبوة والحبّ الغامر لابنته؛ وهو الحبّ الذي قلب حياته وحياة أسرته رأساً على عقب.
وبعد جهد ومشقّة سُمِّيت الطفلة كلارا غولّا، ونشأت في كنف والديها وتحت بصر والدها وسمعه إلى أن أصبحت شابّة جميلة وذكية وقويّة. لكنّ مصيرها ومصير والديها اتّخذ فجأة منحى مأساوياً بعد مغادرتها كوخ والديها وبيئتها الريفية، وسفرها إلى العاصمة ستوكهولم من أجل العمل وجمع بعض المال لسداد دين والديها.
تدور رواية «إمبراطور البرتغال» حول الحبّ الأبويّ واللّوعة والفقد والانتظار الطويل والمضني، وحول كفاح الفلاحين والفقراء في الريف السويدي في ذلك العصر. وتتميّز بغناها بالوصف الأخّاذ للبشر وللطّبيعة السويدية؛ بأسلوب فريد برعت فيه سلمى لاغرلوف.
