صدرت هذه الرواية، «سارة وألبرت»، في السويد عام 1839 وأحدثت ضجّة كبيرة عند صدورها. وقد أدى ذلك إلى اندلاع نقاشات حادّة في أوساط النخبة الثقافية، فتعرّض المؤلف إلى اضطهاد اجتماعي ممّا اضطره في نهاية المطاف إلى الاستقالة من منصبه كمدير لإحدى المدارس في ستوكهولم.
تدور أحداث رواية «سارة وألبرت» حول الرقيب ألبرت والفتاة سارة ڤيدبيك، اللذين يقعان في حبّ بعضهما خلال رحلة على متن قارب بخاري متّجه من ستوكهولم إلى أربوغا. لكن سارة لا ترغب في الزواج بل تريد أن يعيشا معاً من دون زواج رسمي ومن دون أن يعيشا معاً بشكل دائم ومن دون أن يتشاركا في الممتلكات. وفي ذلك الوقت، كانت هذه الفكرة مذهلة ومتقدمة، ذلك أن النساء لم يكنّ يملكن أمر أنفسهن، بل بقين تحت وصاية الرجال حتى العام 1839. وفي الواقع، أصبحت هذه الفكرة ذات تأثير شديد في المجتمع السويدي الراهن، لكن الأمر استغرق أكثر من 100 عام قبل أن يصبح مقبولاً عيش المرأة والرجل معاً من دون زواج. ومن الجدير بالذكر أن المؤلف نفسه تزوج مجدداً في منفاه الطويل من دون أن يُطلّق زوجته السويدية أولاً، وبالتالي أصبح متّهماً بجريمة تعدّد الزوجات، الأمر الذي لا يزال يعتبر جريمة في السويد حتى اليوم.
أثّر صدور هذا الكتاب، ظهرت حركة أدبية كاملة كرّست نفسها بالكامل لمهاجمة شخص ألمكفيست وأعماله وأفكاره.
