يضم هذا الكتاب دراسة عن المجتمعات البحرية في الخليج العربي وعُمان على مدى المائة وخمسين سنة الماضية؛ تركز بشكل كبير على أهمية الدور التجاري والثقافي والصناعي للسفن الشراعية، ودور هذه السفن في الحياة وفي تفاعل مجتمعات السواحل مع صناعة الإبحار. وبعد تمحيص مصادر تاريخية مؤرشفة وبحث ميداني مكثف ومقابلات رَصَدت أصوات البحّارة وذكرياتهم، يُقدم هذا العمل دراسة تكاملية وحيوية لنشاط السفن الشراعية من منظار تاريخي وجغرافي وثقافي-حِرفيّ. وقد رُصدت العلاقة بين البحر والبحارة وسفنهم ضمن سياق ثقافي شاملٍ للمحيط الهندي، وذلك في إطار ما قيل منهم عن عادات بناء السفن وتقنيات الملاحة وتنظيم طاقم السفن والموانئ. وقد تبادل عرب السواحل في الخليج العربي وعُمان مع غيرهم في شرق المحيط الهندي وغربه المعلومات المتعلقة بالرياح الموسمية التي كانت أساسية للبحّارة ووسائل الإبحار. ونبع من هذا التبادل أسلوبٌ متكامل مع طبيعة الإبحار والبحار، وذكرياتٌ عميقة عن الأساليب التقليدية في الإبحار، وبقي من ذلك تراثٌ فنّي وافرٌ بالأصالة، وفخرٌ غنيٌ بالعادات والتقاليد التي وُثّقت شفهياً من الجيل العربي الخليجي القديم في هذا الكتاب.
