السيد عبد الرحمن المهدي زعيم ديني كبير، وقائد وطني محنك، ورجل سياسة ودولة، ورجل أعمال اقتصادية ضخمة، وصاحب إسهامات اجتماعية وخيرية جمّة، ظل متألقاً في سماء السودان لستة عقود من الزمان، وما من مرفق في الحياة إلا وترك بصماته واضحة عليه. فهو كما وصفه أحد مستشاريه الدكتور عبد الحليم محمد: ظاهرة متعددة المواهب متنوعة السجايا، تتفتح في كل جانب عن قلب إنسان كبير يعشق العمل، والجهاد في سبيل بلاده، يقدر الفن والموهوبين.
إن المعالم البارزة في حياة السيد الإمام ونضاله الطويل جزء لا يتجزأ من نضال هذه الأمة حيث أن سيرة حياته لم تنفصم البتة عن معترك الأحداث والتطورات التي شهدتها السودان في النصف الأول من هذا القرن والتي شكلت السودان الحرّ المستقل. وذلك انه منذ مولده نشأ وترعرع في مركز تلك الأحداث الجسام أو في خضمها، حيث كان لها أبلغ الأثر في تشكيل شخصيته وإنضاج تجربته وتفجير الوعي المبكر فيه، مما أكسبه عزيمة قوية لا تلين، وقدرات عالية عقلاً وممارسة، اكتشف في وقت مبكر أهمية بناء إمكاناته الشخصية والتحول كلية باتجاه الاستقلال الذاتي والشخصي مما أتاح له التمتع ببناء إمكانات مادية، واجتماعية وسياسية كبيرة، ساعدته على التحرك والتفاعل على كافة الأصعدة؛ الاقتصادية والسياسية والاجتماعية، أما عزيمته القوية ومميزات القيادة فمكنته من التفاعل المستمر مع قضايا وطنه.
ورغم قيام الإمام عبد الرحمن الصادق بدور مركزي في بناء السودان الحديث، إلا أنه لم يحظ بما حظي به أمثاله في البلدان، الأخرى، بل أصاب سيرته كثير من الظلم والجحود. وهذا الكتاب يضمّ بين طياته أعمال ومداولات الندوة العلمية التي عقدت للاحتفال بذكرى مئة سنة على وفاة الإمام المهدي والتي تناول الباحثون فيها شخصية السيد ومكانته من جوانبها المختلفة تعريفاً به وبإنجازه وإثراءً للوعي القومي. وللاستفادة من هذه الندوة وتعميم فائدتها تمّ جع أوراق العمل في هذا الكتاب، وتمّ ترتيبها في مصنفين، أولهما للبحوث في القضايا والموضوعات وثانيهما للورقتين عن المراجع والمصادر التي تناولت السيد عبد الرحمن.
