يتناول هذا البحث صورة المفكر الاشتراكي في أدب نجيب محفوظ وذلك استنادا إلى أهم أعماله في هذا الباب وهى خان الخليلي، والقاهرة الجديدة وميرامار ، والكرنك. لقد قدم نجيب محفوظ المفكر الاشتراكي من خلال تلك الأعمال في صورة شائهة ، فهو انعزالى في خان الخليلي ومتناقض في القاهرة الجديدة ومتردد في ميرامار وإيجابي في الكرنكن لكنه يموت قبل انجاز مهمته. وقد غفل نجيب محفوظ في المقابل عن تقديم نماذج إيجابية موجودة في الواقع من المفكرين الاشتراكيين كانوا وما زالوا متمسكين بمبادئهم مناضلين من أجلها وعلى الرغم من ذلك يبقى نجيب محفوظ عبقرى الرواية العربية وعبقري الرصد الواقعي في الساحتين المصرية والعربية.
