تربَّى فيليپ يانسي في عائلةٍ محافظة من الجنوب الأميركيّ، وكان يميلُ إلى النظر إلى الله على أنَّه ‘‘شرطيٌّ ساخط يبحثُ عن أيِّ شخصٍ يحاول التمتُّع بحياته ليقبضَ عليه’’. هكذا يُعبِّر يانسي عن ‘‘تعافيه’’ من كنيسةٍ أدَّت ممارساتُها إلى ترسيخ هذه الصورة الخاطئة عن الله. وينعكسُ هذا في ما قالَه مرَّةً: ‘‘أنا أؤلِّف كُتبًا لنفسي. أنا حاجٌّ أتعافى من التربية الكنسيَّة السيِّئة، وأبحثُ عن الإيمان الذي يجعلُ تابعيه أكبر لا أصغر. أشعر بعرفانٍ غامرٍ لتَمكُّني من وَضْعِ كتاباتٍ حيَّة في ما يتعلَّق بالأسئلة التي لطالَما أثارت اهتمامي’’. للمؤلِّف عدَّة كتبٍ منشورة، وقد تُرجمَ منها إلى العربيَّة من أوفير للطباعة والنشر كتابَي : ‘‘عندما لا تمطر السماء’’، و‘‘بالكاد نَجوت’’.
