فى أيامنا هذه تزايد إحساسنا بأهمية كل من علم النفس والتحليل النفسى، حتى يمكن فهم الكثير من سلوكنا ونشاطنا، وأخلاقياتنا، وأمراضنا النفسية، وانحرافاتنا الإجتماعية، هذا الفهم الذى ولا شك نحن فى أمس الحاجة إليه للإستفادة منه فى محاولات إصلاح كل ما يحتاج إلى إصلاح من هذه الحالات وتلك الظواهر المرفوضة، أو للإستفادة منه فى تدعيم وتنمية وغرس ما نحتاج إليه من حالات وظواهر طيبة مرغوبة.
وعلى هذا؛ فقد كان من أوائل أهدافنا أن نقدم هذه الموسوعة للمثقف العام، لكى يجد فيها بغيته من المعرفة العلمية التى تعينه على تحقيق قدر أكبر وأدق من الفهم لما يستخدم من مصطلحات فى علم النفس والتحليل النفسى أو يقابله منها مستمعاً أو قارئاً، كما يجد فيها ما يشبع فضوله لمعرفة المزيد من المعلومات النفسية والمعارف العلمية الدقيقة، من ذوى الإختصاص، وفى ذات الوقت نقدمها للمتخصص أو الباحث العلمى فى علم النفس والتحليل النفسى، حيث يجد فيها بغيته فى إستجلاء ما يقابله من مصطلحات يريد معرفة المزيد عنها، أو التعريف بها (إن كانت تقابله لأول مرة).
ومع أن علم النفس قد شارف قرناً وعقدين من الزمان (إذا أرخنا لميلاد علم النفس -كما تميل الغالبية- بعام 1879). وأيضاً قد استكمل قرناً من عمره (منذ بدايات إنشاء فرويد له فى نهايات القرن التاسع عشر)؛ إلا أننا لازلنا نحس فى مصر والعالم العربى بحاجتنا إلى موسوعة لعلم النفس والتحليل النفسى تعرض لشرح مفاهيمها ومصطلحاتهما عرضاً علمياَ يتسم بالدقة والأصالة والحداثة. وقد كان لنا هدف أساسى ثالث، لا يقل أهمية؛ وهو أن نستفيد من ثراء اللغة العربية وعبقريتها فى ترجمة مصطلحات علم النفس والتحليل النفسى ترجمة عربية سليمة ومرضية آملين أن تشبع فى الكتابات العربية شيوعاً يوحد مفاهيم علم النفس والتحليل النفسى ومصطلحاتهما فى مختلف بلاد الوطن العربى. أما ترتيب المصطلحات، فقد فضلنا أن نتبع فيه الأبجدية العربية، طالما كنا نقدم الموسوعة أساساً لقراء العربية.
