من بين كتب جين أوستن كان الكتاب المفضل لبرناديت هو "كبرياء وهوى"، لذا قالت لجوسلين إنه ربما يكون الكتاب المفضَّل للجميع فأوصت بالبدء به، بيد أن دانيال زوج سيلفيا إحدى أعضاء نادينا، كان قد طلب الطلاق مؤخراً بعد زواج دام اثنين وثلاثين عاماً لذا فضلت جوسلين ألا تعرّض سيلفيا لمشاعرَ قد تثيرها شخصية السيد دارسي الجذّابة، فقرّرتُ أن نبدأ برواية "إيما" وبرّرتُ لبرناديت "إنه ما من أحد قرأها من قبل وتمنّى أن يكون متزوجاً".
تعرفت جوسلين إلى سيلفيا عندما كانتا في الحادية عشرة من العمر، وهما الآن في أوائل الخمسينيات، أوستن التي تعني سيلفيا هي الإبنة، والأخت، والعمّة، التي كتبت كتبها في غرفة جلوس مكتظّة، وقرأتها بصوت عالٍ أمام أسرتها، مع هذا لم يمنعها ذلك من أن تكون مراقبة ثاقبة الذكاء وموضوعية مع الأشخاص من حولها.
يمكن لأوستن الخاصة بسيلفيا أن تُحِب وأن تُحَب، من غير أن يؤثر ذلك على رؤيتها ويقلل من حدّة حكمها، ربما كانت سيلفيا هي السبب الأساس وراء وجود نادي الكتاب، فقد أرادت جوسلين فقط أن تشغلها عن الظروف الصعبة التي يمر به زواجها؛ وهذا من شِيم جوسلين، فسيلفيا كانت من أقدم أصدقائها والأقرب إلى قلبها.
ألم يكن الكاتب الإنجليزي كبلينغ مَن قال: "ما من أحد يضاهي تأثير جين عندما تجد نفسك في مأزق"، أو شيئاً من هذا القبيل؟...
اقترحت برناديت بعد ذلك: "أرى أن أعضاء النادي يجب أن يكونوا جميعاً من النساء، لأن ديناميكية اللقاء تتغير مع الرجال، فهو يتشدّقون بالكلام بدلاً من التواصل، ويتجاوزون الوقت المعطى لهم للكلام".
