تدور أحداث الرواية في كاليفورنيا المكسيكية، وتتمحور حول دون دييغو فيغا، الذي يبدو بمظهره الخارجي مجرد إرستقراطي خجول مفرط في أناقته. لكن المظاهر تخدع، وهي ليست سوى قناع يختفي خلفه روبن هود كاليفورنيا المعروف باسم زورو، الذي يهوي بضربات سيفه على أولئك الذين يستغلون الفقراء والمضطهدين. "علامة زورو" ما تزال نموذجاً للمغامرة المتهورة والرواية الشعبية حتى اليوم.
جونستون مالك كالي (2 شباط 1883 – 23 تشرين الثاني 1958) كتب مئات القصص وخمسين رواية ، والعديد من نصوص السيناريو للسينما والتلفزيون وهو الى جانب خلقه الشخصية زورو، أبدع العديد من الشخصيات المثيرة، التي تحول معظمها إلى الأبطال المقنعين الذين برزوا في الثقافة الشعبية من زمن ماك كالي وحتى يومنا هذا بما فيهم "الرجل الوطواط".
