هنالك العديد من الكتب الطبية المدرسية المرجعية Textbooks، وثمة الكثير من الأطالس الملونة ذات العلاقة بالموضوع نفسه، صدرت عن دور نشر مختلفة. إلا أنه لم يسبق لأحد-على حد علمنا-أن حاول الجمع بين أطلس ملون شامل ومعلومات طبية سريرية في كتاب واحد. وباعتقادنا أنه إذا لم تشفع المعلومات السريرية النظرية بالممارسة العلمية، أو على الأقل برؤية الحالة في مريض يشاهده الطالب أمامه، تبقى فجوات لا بد من العمل على ردمها. ومن هنا جاءت أهمية الأطالس الطبية الملونة من خلال الصور الناطقة التي تحتويها، إلى أن كثرة عدد طلاب والإقامة القصيرة للمرضى في المستشفيات التعليمية نجم عمهما أن العديد من طلاب الطب يكملون تدريبهم من غير أن يتسنى لهم رؤية مرضى مصابين بالكثير من الأمراض البشرية الأقل شيوعاً.
ونحن في هذا الكتاب، نحاول أن نجمع بين أوضح المعالم التي تطرقت إليها الأطالس الطبية، وبين المعلومات التي وردت في أدب الطب السريري. ولقد دمجنا معاً مجموعة شاملة من الصور لكي نبين العلامات السريرية لمعظم الأمراض الرئيسية، وعززنا ذلك بصور شعاعية وفوق صوتية وتنظيرية. وحرصاً منا على جعل هذا الكتاب في الحجم المعقول، فقد تجنبنا صور التشريح المرضي، ولم نورد منها إلا ما كان ذا علاقة هامة ومباشرة بتشخيص العديد من الاضطرابات وبدا ذلك بصورة رئيسية في مبحثي الكلية والدم.
إن فصول هذا الكتاب متماثلة في طريقة عرضها للمعلومات. فلقد بدأنا كل فصل بدليل إيضاحي يهدي إلى الأعراض والعلامات والاستقصاءات. ثم تابعنا العرض بتغطية شاملة للأمراض الشائعة والأمراض النادرة، وسوف يساعد الإسناد المرجعي الموسع المرافق للنص أو الصورة في الاستخدام الفعال للصور الإيضاحية الواردة، بحيث غدا هذا الكتاب مرجعاً إيضاحياً يستمتع به ويستفيد منه أكبر عدد من العاملين في مجال الطب.
