تواجه الدراسات النقدية الحديثة، الموقوفة على درس الأدب العربي القديم، مجموعة من المنزلقات الخطيرة، التي يمكنها أن تنحرف بالدارس عن الجادة والصواب، انسياقاً وراء العصبية العرقية حيناً، أو انبهار بما يصادفه من جديد وغريب، يسعى إلى تملكه حيناً ثانياً، أو حرصاً على لذة التوفيق وإيجاد التناسب والتشابه بين الآداب المختلفة حيناً ثالثاً.
والرواية تمثل وجهاً بارزاً من وجوه هذه الدعوى، فوجودها في الآداب الأوروبية الحديثة بشكل فني ناضج، والإصطلاح على أنواعها بمصطلحات محددة وواضحة، دفع النقاد العرب إلى البحث عن موقف الأدب العربي القديم من هذا الشكل الأدبي، وكان التباين في الاتجاهات على النحو الذي سوف يظهره تمهيد هذا البحث، والذي سوف ينتهي بنا إلى ضرورة تبني منهج أكثر أمناً وبعداً عن دائرة هذه المنزلقات. وهو قراءة نصوص هذا الأدب العربي القديم لإستنباط ما تحويه من أشكال، بدلاً من معرفة هذه الأشكال وتحديدها ثم البحث عن تواجدها في هذه النصوص.
والدراسة- بعد ذلك- تحاول اختبار مدى صلاح هذا المنهج من خلال تحديد نص بذاته- هو نص غفران أبي علاء المعري في القسم الأول منه-، ثم قراءة هذا النص وتحليله لمعرفة حدود الشكل الروائي فيه، الذي يعد مجرد إثبات وجوده فيه موطن خلاف بين الباحثين من أصحاب المنهج الآخر، المهتمين بالبحث عن شكل روائي بذاته في نصوص الأدب العربي القديم، وقيمة هذا المنهج أنه سوف يساعدنا أن نتبين بشكل تفصيلي ودقيق- في كل نص على حدة- ما يحويه من أنماط روائية، ثم أنه سوف يتيح لنا- وهذا هو الأهم- أن نتساءل وأن نقدم التفسيرات عن سر تشكل الأدب العربي القديم بشكل روائي معين دون سواه، لنتبين في النهاية أن كان هذا الشكل الروائي ملائماً للظروف البيئية والزمنية التي عاشها هذا النص الأدبي العربي، أم كان مقصراً وغير مواكب لما كان متاحاً له من الإمكانات البيئية والزمانية.
