Comme mon travail précédent, La cité arabe de Tāif, de la veille de l’hégire (1), ces pages ont été composées, en prenant pour base un canevas préexistant.
Elles contiennent le développement d’une conference donnée, le 7 Févreir 1910, à l’institut égyptein du Caire et publié dans le Bulletin (2) de cet Institut, sous le titre: La république marchande de la Mecque, en l’an 600 de notre ère.
Ces pages m’ont fourni ensuite la matière de leçons publiques, professées à l’Institut biblique pontifical de Rome, pendant les années 1913- 1914 (3). De même que La cité arabe de Tāif, je les destinais à faire suite au Berceau de l’ Islam; l’Arabie occidentale à la veille de l’hégire (4).
Ells devaient compléter la série des prolégoménes ou introduction à la Sira, achiever l’etude, qu’après le travail sur les Bédouins, j’avais pris l’engagement de consacrer aux populations sédentaires du Hiģāz.
