حيث يتناول الباحث أخبارهم، وأصنافهم في أدب الجاحظ، وشعراء بني ساسان، أبي الشمقمق، وأبي فرعون، والأحنف العكبري، وابن الحجاج، وابن سكرة... ويتناول الكدية في مقامات الهمذاني، ومقامات الحريري، وما بعده، ومقامات اليازجي، وصولاً إلى الاحتيال في مجالس الحكم، والعلم والأدب الشعبي، ويقول المؤلف في مقدمته للكتاب: "فهذا بحث في أدب الكدية، أنضيت له ليلي، وهزلت نهاري، وأنفقت فيه من زهرة العمر ما لو أنفقته في تعلم فن الكدية لسست ساسان، وعلمت بنية أساليب البيان، وطالعت من الأسفار، أضعاف ما تجشم أصحابه من الأسفار، وسودت له من الطروس، أضعاف ما جمعوا من الفلوس...!".
