تم العثور على هذه الرواية بعد أكثر من خمسة وثلاثين عامًا من رحيل مؤلفها "ألبير كامي", وتم استقبالها بحفاوة حين نشرت لأول مرة منذ أربعة أعوام بعد أن عكف متخصصون في أدب المؤلف على دراستها ومتابعة النص, ثم نشرت ضمن ما سمي بـ"أوراق ألبير كامي".. أغلب الظن أن كامي كان يكتب هذه الرواية على فترات متقطعة في نهاية الأربعينات والتي تدور أحداثها كلها, في الجزائر إبان الاحتلال الفرنسي, مثلما حدث في رواية "الغريب".. إنها رواية عن التحول الذي يعيشه صبي صغير, عليه أن يترك عالمه القديم كي يصبح رجلًا لأول مرة. هذا نص كاد أن يتوه في دائرة النسيان.. فأصبح بعد العثور عليه شاهدًا على عبقرية صاحبه.. ألبير كامي.
