هذا الكتاب مكتوب من أجل مدى واسع من ممارسي وطلبة الصحة النفسية. وهو يسعى إلى ادخال مهن الصحةالنفسية إلى العصر الرقمي المزدهر وسط طيف دائم التغير من التحديات الأخلاقية و القانونية. على سبيل المثال، الانترنت كوسيط من أجل إجراء جلسات الإرشاد، و التواصل مع المسترشدين ، وتخزين السجلات اثار مشكلات أخلاقية وقانونيةجديدة و التي تطالب التأمل الحذر فيها. في هذا العصر الجديد، أصبحت مفاهيم أخلاقية وقانونيةأساسية مثل السرية و الموافقة المستنيرة أكثر تعقيدًا وحساسية بشكل مفاجئ. أن هجمات القرصنه على الانترنت تجعل السرية امر بعيد المنال. ومع ظهور وسائل التواصل الاجتماعي، أصبح الأن من الممكن أن يصل أي إنسان إلى المعلومات الشخصية لمعظم الناس، ومنها معلومات المعالجين ومسترشديهم، و هذا يسبب تأكل في حدود الخصوصية. وتوسع العلاقات متعددة الادوار لتشمل العلاقات عبر الانترنت، والتي يحتمل أن تضع ضغطًا على موضوعية كل من المعالج والمسترشد. واتساع القدره على حفظ الحياة البشرية إلى ما وراء الجودة ذات المغزى أدى إلى تغيير في المعايير الراسخه مثل تحريم الانتحار بمساعدة الطبيب و القتل الرحيم، والثاني منهما هو الأن قانوني في بعض الدول. وفي مجالات الصحةالنفسية، حفزت مسارات التفكير الجديدة هذه تغيرات في الكيفيه التي يتعامل بها المعالجون مع المسترشدين ذوي الأمراض الميؤوس منها الذين يرغبون في تسريع موتهم. وهنا، بدات مواثيق الأخلاق المهنية في مخاطبتة الموضوع، بينما ماتزال المعايير القانونية غير واضحة، وهذا يترك المعالجين في حيرة حول ما الذي يجب أن يفعلوه. في الواقع، لو قام المعالجون بمجرد اتباع تعاليمهم الدينية و/ أو الأخلاقية، فانهم يخاطرون بفرض قيمهم بالقوه على مسترشديهم، ومن ثم يتعدون على استقلالية المسترشد . ولو اثروا جانب السلامه بتجنب أي مخاطرةقانونية محتمله، فانهم عندها يضعون مصلحتهم الذاتية فوق استقلالية المسترشد ، وربما فوق مصلحته الامثل.
