أضَعُ بين يدي القارئ العربي هذا النص الذي كتبه الفيلسوف الفرنسي بيار بايل (1647 - 1706) والذي مرّت عليه تقريبا ثلاثة قرون. وهو مُقتطف من مؤلّفه الضّخم: "قاموس تاريخي ونقدي". وعلى القارئ العربي ألاّ يُصدم ببعض العبارات الجارحة المُنتشرة هنا وهناك في ثنايا نص بيار بايل، مثل تسميته محمد بالنبي الكذاب، لأن هذه العبارة ومثيلاتها كانت العملة السائدة عند بعض الكتاب الغربيين في تلك الفترة. لكن إذا نظرنا للمسألة عن قرب فإن بايل لم يكن ليّنًا لا مع اليهودية ولا مع المسيحية، بما في ذلك الملّة البروتستانتية التي اعتنقها في فترة ما من حياته ... ورغم أن بايل كان بمقدوره، في تلك الفترة بالذات، أن يقول على الإسلام كل المساوئ التي يمكن أن يتخيّلها، وأن يُلصق بنبيّ الاسلام كل التّهم الكلاسيكية التي قذفه بها المجادلون المسيحيون من قبله، نظرا إلى أن قوة إسلامية ضاربة، كالإمبراطورية العثمانية، لم تنفكّ تُهدّد أوروبا في وجودها منذ القرن الخامس عشر، فقد امتنع عن فعل ذلك. حاول أن يكون موضوعيا بقدر الامكان، فحَصّن نفسه بكمٍّ هائل من المصادر القديمة والحديثة، بما في ذلك مصادر عربيّة، لكنه ذهب أبعد من ذلك: دافع عن نبيّ الاسلام ضد المجادلين المسيحيين واتّهمهم بالتجديف وبسوء النيّة، نظرا إلى تشبّثهم بخرافات بعض الكُتّاب المسلمين، التي تستنقص من قدر نبيّهم، واستخدموها لصالح قضيّتهم: «إنّ حماسة مُماحِكِينا ـ يَكتب بايل ـ هي بمعنى ما، غير مُنصِفة؛ لأنّهم إذا استخدموا تهوّر مُخرِّفٍ مُسلمٍ، يصوّر محمدا في صورة مَكروهة أو سخيفة، فهم ينتهكون مبدأ العدل الواجب تطبيقه على كل الناس، الأشرار منهم أو الأخيار. لا يجب أن نَتّهم الناس بما لم يَقترفوه أبدا؛ وبالتالي غير مسموح لنا أن نُحاجج ضد محمد من خلال أحلام بعض أتباعه، إذا لم يكن صحيحا أنه هو نفسه قد نسبها لشخصه». لقد أردفتُ نصّ الترجمة ببعض التعقيبات الطفيفة التي وضعتُها بين مُعقّفَين، وحافظتُ على عناوين المراجع التي ذكرها بيار بايل بلُغتها الأصليّة، ولم أتدخّل إلاّ نادرا وعند الحاجة لترجمتها إلى العربية.
