أدى استيلاء الصليبيين على بيت المقدس في نهاية الحملة الصليبية الأولى عام 1099م، إلى ظهور العديد من المؤلفات التاريخية التي سجلت أحداث هذه الفترة وما أعقبها من حملات صليبية. ونشط المؤرخون اللاتين في تقديم رؤى مختلفة من خلال مجموعة من المصادر سواء أكانت لشهود عيان شاركوا في أحداثها، أو من نقل عن العائدين إلى الغرب الأوربي . على الرغم من أن كتاب «رادولف دى كان» يصنف ضمن الفئة الثانية من المصادر اللاتينية، وذلك لأنه لم يكن شاهد عيان للأحداث التي كتبها، إلا أنه نقلها عن المشاركين فيها، وعلى رأسهم تانكرد الذي صحبه في بلاد الشام وكان القس الخاص به لمدة حوالي ست سنوات، كما صحب بوهمند أثناء وجوده في الغرب الأوربي. وكان لذلك أكبر الأثر في نقله لتفاصيل غابت عن المصادر الأخرى شهود العيان . كما أن أرنولف بطريرك بيت المقدس والذي عاصر هذه الأحداث منذ بدايتها، وكان لاعباً أساسياً في نسج أحداثها لم يكن مصدراً لاخباره فحسب ، بل راجع الكتاب كما يذكر المؤرخ. وبالإضافة إلى تعلم المؤرخ وثقافته الواسعة، كان لذلك أكبر الأثر في أهمية هذا المصدر الذي يترجم للمرة الأولى من لغته اللاتينية الأصلية إلى اللغة العربية.
