جاء الكتاب تحت عنوان "إحراق الكتب: تاريخ الهجوم على المعرفة" وهو من تأليف ريتشارد أوفندن وترجمة زينة بارودي ومراجعة وتحرير مركز التعريب والبرمجة في بيروت.
في كتابه "إحراق الكتب: تاريخ الهجوم على المعرفة" يروي مدير مكتبات البودلين الشهيرة في أكسفورد ريتشارد أوفندن التاريخ العالمي للدمار المتعمد – والبقاء المفاجئ – للمعرفة المسجلة على مدار الثلاثة آلاف سنة الماضية.
تعرضت المكتبات ودور المحفوظات للهجوم منذ العصور القديمة، ولكنها تعرضت للتهديد بشكل خاص في العصر الحديث. اليوم تواجه المعرفة التي تحويها المكتبات تدميراً وإهمالاً متعمدين؛ بسبب حرمانها من التمويل، وهذا ما يجعلها تكافح من أجل وجودها. يروي المؤلف قصة صراع المعرفة التي تحتويها المكتبات من أجل البقاء من الماضي حتى اليوم.
عبر صفحات الكتاب يصف ريتشارد أوفندن التدمير المتعمد للمعرفة الموجودة في المكتبات والمحفوظات من الإسكندرية القديمة إلى سراييفو المعاصرة، من الألواح الآشورية المحطمة في العراق إلى وثائق الهجرة المدمرة لجيل وندريش في المملكة المتحدة.. ثم يدرس الدوافع وراء هذه الأعمال – السياسية والدينية والثقافية – والمواضيع الأوسع التي تشكل هذا التاريخ.. كما ينظر إلى محاولات منع الهجمات على المعرفة والتخفيف منها، ويعرض لجهود أمناء المكتبات والمحفوظات للحفاظ على المعلومات وهم الذين وضعوا في معظم الأحيان حياتهم على المحك.
المؤلف ريتشارد أوفندن: هو أمين البودلين، والشخص الخامس والعشرون الذي يشغل المنصب التنفيذي الأول في مكتبة جامعة أكسفورد. منذ عام 1987، عمل في عدد من الأرشيفات والمكتبات المهمة، بما في ذلك مكتبة مجلس اللوردات، والمكتبة الوطنية في إسكتلندا (بصفته أميناً للمكتبة) وفي جامعة إدنبرة، حيث كان مديراً للمجموعات.
