عالم نفس وفيلسوف إنساني ألماني أمريكي ولد في مدينة فرانكفورت -ألمانيا في 23 مارس عام 1900. هاجر إلى الولايات المتحدة الأمريكية في 1934 من أعماله :الخوف من الحرية (1941) التحليل النفسى والدين (1950) اللغة المنسية : مدخل إلى فهم الأحلام والقصص الخيالية والأساطير (1951) المجتمع العاقل (1955) رسالة سيجموند فرويد : تحليل لشخصيته وتأثيره (1959) أزمة التحليل النفسى : مقالات عن فرويد وماركس وعلم النفس الاجتماعى (1970) تشريح نزوع الإنسان إلى التدمير (1973) كما حرر كتبا، بأقلام كتاب متعددين عن بوذية زن ومفهوم ماركس للإنسان وغيرها توفي فروم في 23 مارس عام 1980.

عندما تهدم عالم العصور الوسطى بدا أن الإنسان الغربي يتجه صوب تحقيق أقصى أحلامه ورؤاه. فقد حرر نفسه من سلطة الكنيسة الشمولية وثقل الفكر التقليدي والمحددات الجغرافية لعالمنا الذي لم يكتشف سوى نصفه، وأسس علماً جديداً أدى في النهاية إلى ظهور قوى منتجة لم يسمع عنها من قبل.
