وتتلخص الفكرة التي عالجها في أن اللغة غريزة إنسانية تماثل غيرها من الغرائز، وهذه نظرة حاول الدارسون قبله التدليل عليها منذ ان أثارها في العصر الحديث عالم اللسانيات المشهور نعوم تشومسكي.
وقد نجح بنكر في التأليف بين مختلف الأدلة للتدليل على هذه الفكرة بأوضح ما يكون، وقد حاز هذا الكتاب منذ أن نشر في 1994 ثناء منقطع النظير من المتخصصين.
فقد وصفه تشومسكي بأنه: "كتاب ثمين جداً".
وقد ظهرت له عدة مراجعات كثيرة كلها إشادة به ولما قرأت هذا الكتاب وجدت أن ترجمته لازمة على خدمة للقراء العرب، وبخاصة طلاب الدراسات العليا في اللسانيات وعلم النفس، وها أنذا أضعه بين أيدي القراء الكرام، راجياً أن يكون إسهاماً ذا أثر في مسار هذه الدراسات.
