استهدف الكتاب توصيف وتحليل وتفسير تجاوزات الصحافة المصرية وحدود حريتها في ظل أخلاقيات المهنة كما توضحها معايير تقارير الممارسة للصحافة المصرية، كما تم توضيح أن الحق في حرية الرأي والتعبير والحصول على المعلومات ليس ترفًا، بل هو حق من حقوق الإنسان الأساسية اللازمة لإدراك كافة الحقوق والحريات الأخرى، وكما أظهر الكتاب، المواثيق والعهود الدولية لحقوق الإنسان تنص على قدرة الحكومات على وضع هامش ضيق للحد من حرية التعبير في بعض الحالات لحماية المصالح المختلفة، مثل الأمن القومي أو النظام العام، أو الصحة العامة والأخلاق، وفي الوقت نفسه، لا تبقى تلك المواثيق الدولية صامتة بشأن كيفية تقييم شرعية هذه القيود، فالسوابق القضائية للمحكمة الأوروبية لحقوق الإنسان تنص على توجيهات واضحة بشأن كيفية تقييم القيود المفروضة على حرية التعبير، من خلال الاختبار الدقيق المكون من ثلاثة أجزاء، ومع ذلك يمكن القول إنه في الدول الديمقراطية ينبغي دائمًا أن يكون التوازن بين الحق في حرية الرأي والتعبير وغيرها من "المصالح" في جانب الحق الأساسي في حرية الرأي والتعبير، بما فيها حرية الصحافة.
