يطرح هذا الكتاب قضية جد خطيرة هى ختان الذكور ذلك أنها أكثر انتشار من ختان الإناث سواء فى مصر أو على مستوى العالم إذ يقدر عدد من يختنون من الذكور على العالم بـ 13.3 مليون ذكر بينما تختن 2 مليون أنثى سنويا ومعظم من يختنون من الجنسين أطفال لا يمتلكون حق الرفض ولا الدفاع عن أنفسهم هند بتر جزء حى وسليم وحساس من أجسادهم حتى لو كان ضئيلا.
ومنذ أن بدأت الحركة النشطة ضد ختان الإناث فى سنة 1994 لانة انتهاك بدنى للنساء يجحف حقوقهن افنسانية لم يتطرق احد من الأطباء أو الشيوخ الذين يدفعون الناس ضد ختان الإناث غلى ضوروة التوعية لخطورة ختان الذكور باعتباره قضية مسكوت عنها من قضايا التعامل مع الجسد البشرية بحكم ذكورة أو أنوثه الفرد (وهو ما يعتبر احد اهتمامات دراسات النوع أى الدراسات المعنية ببحث الهوية والدور الاجتماعيين للرجال والنساء) وعلى ذلك تقدم الدكتورة سهام عبد السلام فى الكتاب فرضية نظرية حول ختان الذكور مع تدعيم تطبيقى عبر مجموعة من المثقفين حسب رؤية انطونيو جرامش وإدوارد سعيد للمثقف العضوى – الذين تعرض ابناءهم إن سلبا أو إيجابيا لعملية ختان الذكور مفندة خطورة تلك العملية من منطلق موقف عملى رافض للمساس باجساد الاطفال أيا كان نوعهم ذكور ام إناث ومن ثم عدم القبول الاجتماعى لها بيسر حتى وغن كانت الدراسات الطبية الأحداث قد أثبتت خطر الاعتقادات التى سادت لزمن بعيد عن الفوائد الصحية لختان الذكور.
والأكثر أهمية فى الكتاب تناوله لقضية ختان الذكور عبر الدين والطب والثقافة والتاريخ ومن ثم تضمنه لاثبات أن عادة ختان الذكور ترتكز على تحيزات اجتماعية تهدف إلى الحفاظ على مراتب التسلط والخضوع بين النوعين الذكور والإناث وأن تحليل المعارف والمعتقدات والخبرات التى تشكل الخطاب القائم خلف هذا الاتجاه قد يكشف جوانب خفية فى سياسيات القوى التى تحكم العلاقات الاجتماعية بين النساء والرجال فى المجتمع الأبوي الراهن.
