يستخدم هذا الكتاب أعشاباً مألوفة ليبحث في التفاعلات بين بيولوجيا الأعشاب والإنسان منذ العصر الجليدي الأخير. وتقدم الفصول الثلاثة الأولى أساسيّات بيولوجيا الأعشاب، بما في ذلك نباتات كثيراً ما يحسبها الناس أعشاباً. ويقدّم الفصل الأول العائلات العشبية وأسماءها قبل البحث في علاقات تطور العائلات العشبية وأصلها ويتبع ذلك فصول تقدّم شرحاً مفصلاً عن القمح والذرة والأرز وقصب السكر، وتبرز دور الأعشاب بوصفها وسائط للحضارة، وتدجين المحاصيل، وإنتاج الغذاء في مواجهة الانفجار السكاني وطرائق تغيرات المجتعات الإنسانية واستجابتها لاستخدام الأعشاب. أما العلاقة بين الأعشاب والفطريات، سواء أكانت إيجابية أم سلبية، فهي موضوع الفصل الثاني. ويتبع ذلك فصول عن الاستفادة من الأعشاب كعلف ووقود وفي المسطحات الخضراء، بالإضافة إلى فصل عن دور الأعشاب الطفيلية.
