الشعر مرآة للحياة، والشعر الأمريكي مرآة لحياة الشعب الأمريكي، حياة أناس يومية، بما لها وما عليها؛ وفي هذه المختارات لثلاثة من أبرز شعراء القرن العشرين في الولايات المتحدة، نرى إلى تأملات وتطلعات وتفاصيل الحياة تتمرأى بشكل أو بآخر.
فالحياة اليومية هناك ليست خطب السياسة وأحابيلها، ولا منتجات الشركات وسلعها، ولا أفلام هوليود وما تصوره من مغامرات - كما قد يتوهم الكثيرون - بالعكس، إذا كان هناك ما يمكن ملاحظته في هذا المختارات حول هذه الأمور، فهو النفور من سطحية الحياة أو تفاهاتها (كما في قصيدة فروت "لا بعيداً ولا عميقاً"، مثلاً)، أو التعرّض بشكل مباشر إلى الظلم الواقع على السود في أميركا، كما في شعر لأنْغِستِنْ هيوز، وسواء في شعر فروست، الغني بتفاصيل الحياة ومشاهدها وتأملاتها، أو في شعر هيوز، المتصدي للاعدالة العنصرية والإنسانية، أو في قصائد ستيفنز، ذات البعد الرمزي والدلالات الأكثر تعقيداً وأقل مباشرة نجد هموم الإنسان الأميركي - والإنسان بصورة عامة - حاضرةً.
في هذه المختارات تم إستبعاد بعض الأنواع من القصائد، كالقصائد المطوّلة مثلاً، أو تلك التي تسترسل في وصف الطبيعة، فالذائقة الجمالية والشعرية اليوم تختلف عما كانت عليه قبل عقود.
عليه أتت هذه المختارات تحمل طابع العصرية وروح زمننا الحالي، سواء جمالياً، بحكم بنائها الفني، أو إنسانياً، بحكم مواضيعها وهمومها.
