تدور الرواية حول الشاب هاشم جميل النادي، ويقص علينا المؤلف معاناة هذا الشاب الذي نشأ في ظروف عائلية صعبة حرمته من طفولته، حيث تعرض والده لأزمة نفسية جعلته لا يستطيع الإنفاق عليه وأخوته فاضطر للعمل في ورشة عمه.
وفجأة يذهب تفكيره في الدخول في جماعة منظمة للدعوة وللعمل التطوعي، وكان كثيرًا ما يتحدث مع أصدقائه في هذا الأمر، فنصحه أحدهم بالانضمام للإخوان المسلمين، فذهب ليقرأ عنهم وقام بشراء كتب حسن البنا مؤسس الجماعة وبدأ في قراءة رسائله، فانبهر بها ووجد فيها ضالته.
وبعدها بدأ يدعو أصدقاءه في المدرسة عقب الانتهاء من صلاة الظهر في الجمعة لتنظيم رحالات كشافة، وبدأ يضع لنفسه جدولًا للعبادات والطاعات، وتكوين مكتبته، وفجأة يصطدم بممارسات التنظيم في الانتخابات البرلمانية التي تشير لها الرواية أنها عام 2010. وذلك لأنه وجدها غير متفقة مع ما تعلمه من أفكار ورسائل حسن البنا في الانتخابات، فقرر أن يحتفظ بدعوة الإخوان التي تشربها كفكرة من رسائل البنا، ويترك التنظيم لمن يتحملون قيوده، ليخرج من ضيق تنظيم الإخوان إلى سعة المجتمع الإنساني ويذهب في بعثة إلى شيفيلد.
