حين تطرق علماء المسلمين إلى ظاهرة القياس في الأسماء اختلفت مناهجهم باختلاف مذاهبهم وميولهم، فمنهم من تناولها بشكل مستقل كما فعل معظم علماء أصول الفقه، ومنهم من ذكرها عرضًا خلال حديثه كما فعل معظم علماء اللغة. ففرضت على طبيعة هذا البحث أن أتناول كل فئة على حدة. فخصصت للتمهيد تعريف القياس وتوضح المقصود من القياس في الأسماء، وما يتعلق به من أمور.
وفي الباب الأول درست مواقف الأصوليين من القياس في الأسماء، وفيه عرض لأدلة المؤيدين والمنكرين ومناقشها، وفي الباب الثاني تناولت موقف اللغويين من القياس في الأسماء وفيه دراسة لما تناولوه في هذه القضية، ثم أتبعت ذلك بخاتمة أوضحت فيها ما توصلت إليه من نتائج.
