تكمن أهمية باربارا كاسانْ في غنى مسيرتها الفلسفية، التي يتقاطع فيها القديم والحديث، في حقول فلسفة اللغة والتحليل النفسي والفكر السياسي، مرتكزة على الحضور القوي للفكر السفسطائي. وقد اختارت طريق السفسطائية من أجل خلق مسافة مع التقاليد التي عبَرت التاريخ الفلسفي الغربي من بارمنيدس إلى هايدغر. فهي لم تعالج مسألة الترجمة من منظور تقني أو لساني، بل إنها حفرت في عمق الفكر اللساني للثقافة اليونانية. وهو ما يجعل من كتاب مديح الترجمة رؤية نقدية لمفهوم الواحد ولكونية اللوغوس، مستلهمة رؤيتها من السفسطائية بهدف الإعلاء من شأن ما يدعوه اللوغوس بـ«الهمجية» و«ما لا يمكن ترجمته»، وباعتمادها على الجناس البلاغي باعتباره مقوماً أساسياً لفهم خصوصيات اللغات البشرية واختلافاتها واستعصاء الانتقال أحياناً من الواحدة إلى الأخرى. من هنا فإن الترجمة في نظر باربارا كاسان هي مهارةُ التعاطي مع الاختلافات بكل تنويعاتها ولا سيما منها الاختلافات السياسية.
