في عام 1919، وبينما كان يوسف وهبة باشا رئيس الوزراء (القبطي) يمر في شارع سليمان باشا، ألقى عليه طالب الطب (القبطي) عريان يوسف سعد، عضو منظمة «اليد السوداء» ــ والتي كان هدفها اغتيال ضباط الاحتلال البريطاني والمتعاونين معهم من المصريين ــ ألقى عليه قنبلتين ولكن وهبة باشا نجا وحكم على عريان يوسف سعد بالأشغال الشاقة لمدة عشر سنوات. وقد اعترف بأنه أراد، كقبطي، أن يغتال عميل الاستعمار، حتى لا يدان المسلمون ويكون الباعث دينيا، ومن ثَمَّ تشوه الحركة الوطنية. وتتناول هذه المذكرات، التي قد تعتبر أول مذكرات لسجين سياسي مصري في العصر الحديث، تاريخ ثورة 1919 من وجهة نظر أحد المشاركين فيها. وتلقى الضوء على بـعض الأحداث الـمجهولة والمثيرة كاستقلال ميت غمر وإعلانها سلطنة وكيفية التحاقه بمنظمة «اليد السوداء» ــ إحدى أكثر المنظمات المصرية السرية غموضًا ــ وخطة الاغتيال ومذكراته الشيقة في السجن. كتاب ممتع ووثيقة هامة ومثيرة لفترة مجهولة من تاريخ كفاحنا الوطني.
