في السبعينات اكتشف صديق مسودة الرواية لدى بعض اصدقاء غروسمان المخلصين ،ليهربها عبر المنشق الشهير ساخاروف بعدما صورها عن طريق الميكروفيلم لتنشر في سويسرا بالروسية أولا عن دار "لاج دوم" المملوكة لمثقف روسي،سنة 1980 وتتترجم لمختلف لغات العالم لكن لماذا يجب أن نقرأها؟
تقدم "الحياة والمصير" والصادرة عن دار سؤال حكاية ستالينغراد بين خريف 1942 وربيع 1943، من خلالها حكاية بطولات الشعوب السوفياتية كلها وما جابه تلك البطولات من قمع مزدوج، حيث على نسق يجمع بين مفهوم الطيبة عند تولستوي، وتصوير النفس البشرية عند تشيخوف،في بوتقة انسانية واضحة،عرف الكاتب كيف يجمع التاريخ الصغير بالكبير مناقشا ما يحدث في بلاده.وفي كلاسيكية سار فيها على نمط رواية سلفه الكبير تولستوي جعل من "الحرب والمصير" رواية "الحرب والسلام" خاصة بالقرن العشرين.
