ليست هذه الدراسة دفاعاً عن هابرماس ولا حتى نقداً آخر له، ثمة أصوات في المجال اللاهوتي تدافع وتشيد بأخلاقيات الخطاب لهابرماس، أو تحاول وضع نظريته في الفعل التواصلي للعمل بوصفها أساساً لللاهوت، ولكن لا يشكل هؤلاء، ببساطة، سوى أقلية، ولا يقدمون أنفسهم بكونهم مقنعين خارج حدود الدائرة الضيقة، وفي الوقت نفسه، هناك إنتقادات تأتي من العديد من وجهات نظر مختلفة تتسبب بعوائق صعبة بالنسبة لمشروع هابرماس.
تأخذ هذه الدراسة بجدية آراء هابرماس بشأن القضاء العام والحاجة إلى النقاش الحقيقي (وليس مجرد أصوات متنافسة) عبر التراثات، وتحاول (أي هذه الدراسة) تقويم نظريته في المكان الذي فشلت به، بشكل واضح.
