(الليل والنهار) كتاب يتحدث عن لون جميل من ألوان الأدب العربي هو (المفاخرات)، وهو لون أدبي له ضوابطه المعينة كأسلوب له خصوصياته التي ميزته عن الأساليب المعروفة في النثر الأدبي، حيث يتخذ شكل مناظرة تتم بين طرفين مجازيين أو أكثر يقوم بتحريرها المؤلف، وتكون المفاخرة عادة مليئة بجدّ القول وهزله، ورقيق اللفظ وجزله، وغرر البيان ودرره، وملح الأدب ونوادره، والأحاجي النحوية، والأبيات الشعرية، والفتاوى اللغوية. وكتاب الإمام أبي الحسين أحمد بن فارس الرازي (توفي 395ه)، هو مفاخرة بين الليل والنهار. ألفه – كما يقول – لفتى من أهل الجبل سأله ان يثبت له "وريقات في ذكر الليل والنهار وما يصلح أن يفضل به أحدهما على الآخر ويسوى" فارتجل إبن فارس كتابه المذكور مسعفاً له به؛ فيبدأ أول ما يبدأ بذكر قول صاحب الليل الذي سرد مجموعة من الآيات الكريمة التي قمت الليل على النهار، فأجابه صاحب النهار بأن لا فضيلة للتقديم مستدلاً بالقرآن الكريم أيضاً، ثم انتقل الطرفان في المناظرة إلى الأدب العربي شعراً ونثراً، يتخلل ذلك أحاديث نبوية شريفة، وأمثال، وطُرف تاريخية، فتخرج لنا بلوحة أدبية رائعة، تنشرح لها النفوس، وتطرب الأفئدة، وقد جمعت الآية الكريمة والحديث الشريف، وظرافة الشعر العربي، وعبر المثل السائر، وجمال لغة القرآن.
ولأهمية هذا الأثر النفيس، ذو الأهمية التراثية قام السيد حامد الخفاف بتحقيقه إستناداً على النسخة الوحيدة المحفوظة في مكتبة ملك في طهران للسيد عبد العزيز الطباطبائي، فحاول ما استطاع على تقديم نص المخطوطة، وضبط عباراتها، وتخريج الآيات الكريمة والأحاديث الشريفة، مع التعليق على الأمثال السائرة بما يناسب المقام، وشرح الألفاظ الصعبة، بما تيسر من فهم العبارة، مستنداً في ذلك إلى كتب اللغة والأدب، وذاكراً لجملة من الأعلام بترجمة مختصرة، انتزعها من كتب التراجم والرجال. وقد ذيّل كل ذلك في هامش الكتاب.
