إن أحق الاشياء بالتأليف وأولاها بالتصنيف ماغفل عنه المؤلفون ولم يعن به المصنفون مما تانس النفوس اليه وتلقاه بالحرص عليه، وفصل الربيع آرج وأبهج وآنس وأبدع وأرفع من أن أحد حسن ذاته وأعد بديع صفاته. وحسبي بما يعلم الكل منها ويخبر به الجميع عنها شهيداً لما نقلته ودليلاً على ما قلته وهو مع هذه الصفات الرائقة والسمات الشائقة والآلات الفائقة لم يعن بتأليفه أحد ولا انفرد لتصنيفه منفرد.
قال ابو الوليد فلما رأيت ذلك جمعت هذا الكتاب مضمناً ذلك الباب ولست أودعه إلا ما أذكر لأهل الاندلس خاصة في هذا المعنى إذ أو صافهم لم تكرر على الاسماع ولا اكثر امتزاجها بالطباع فتردها شيقة وترودها تيقه وانما ذلك لتضييع أهل بلدهم لاكثرها وغفلتهم عن جلها إنكاراً لفضها مدة بقاء أهلها فاذا انقرضوا تأسفوا بقدر ما كانوا (2 و) تنسفوا وحينئذ لايجدون الاقليلا يغيب في كثيرها وثماداً يفيض عند بحورها ولعمري إن هذه العلة مما صححت استغرابها وأكدت استحسانها واستعذابها.
