بإنتهاء الحرب البليونيسية التي استمرت من عام 425-404 ق.م، بهزيمة أثينا على يد إسبرطة، تطورت الأحداث وتغيرت المفاهيم في المجتمع الأثيني بصفة خاصة والمجتمع الإغريقي بصفة عامة، وأصبح للطبقة المهشمة دور كبير وبارز في المجتمع، وبخاصة تلك التي كانت تلعب أدواراً ثانوية، وهو ما يظهر جلياً في مسرحيات الكوميديا الإغريقية للشاعر أرسطوفانيس، وكذا في خطب الخطباء ومحاورات الفلاسفة؛ وبدأت تلك الشخصيات تأخذ مكانها في المجتمع وبات المواطن العادي يعتاد عليها في مسرحيات الكوميديا الوسطى والحديثة للشاعر مناندروس.
من هذا المنطلق قدم لنا ثيوفراسطوس - الفيلسوف المشاء، تلميذ أرسطو وخليفته في رئاسة مدرسة "الليقيون" - كتاباً صغير الحجم عظيم التأثير، وهو كتاب " طبائع الشخصيات"، يعتمد فيه على أسلوب قريب من منهج التحليل النفسب للشخصيات، يوضح سلوكها ويصور تعاملاتها مع المحيطين بها في المجتمع، يحتوي كتاب " طبائع الشخصيات" على وصف لسلوك ثلاثين شخصية من الشخصيات التي تعتبر مسلكها نقيصة أو تشوبه مثلبة، مثل شخصيات: المداهن، المرائي، البخيل، الثرثار، المختال، الصفيق، الجلف، رفيق الأوغاد، الخسيس.... وغيرها، وقد أتقن ثيوفراسطوس تحليلها وتمكن من تتبع سلوكها بمهارة لافتة للنظر، وأطلعنا على خصالها والسمات السلوكية المميزة لتصرفاتها -مع أهل بيته وجيرانه وأصدقائه وكل المتعاملين معه- بفطنه بالغة وذكاء لا يخفى على أحد، ورسمها بأسلوب جذاب غير منفر ولا معقد.
