سينكلير لويس: مسرحي وروائي أمريكي، ولد في عام 1885، حصل على شهادة الباكالوريوس من جامعةيال في عام 1908.
نُشرت أولى رواياته «هايك والطائرة» في عام 1912.
وتعبر رواية «بابِت»التي نُشرت في عام 1922 أشهر أعماله.
وفي عام 1926 فاز بجائزو بوليتزر عن روايته «اروسميث»لكنه رفضها.
وفي عام 1930 كان أول أمريكي يفوز بجائزة نوبل للآداب.
توفي في روما عام 1951، حيث نُشرت روايته الأخيرة«عالم واسع» بعد وفاته

سنكلير لويس (1885- 1951) من أسطع نجوم الولايات المتحدة في عالم الأدب: ولد في اليوم السابع من شهر شباط عام 1885 بمدينة سوكسنتر التابعة لولادية مينيسوتا، وقد حظي بجائزة نوبل عام 1930، توفي في الحادية والستين من عمره بإحدى المصحَّات الإيطالية، حيث كان يعالج من مرض خطير ألمَّ به خلال الفترة الأخيرة من حياته... وعملاً بوصيَّته أُحرق جثمانه ونقل رماده إلى مسقط رأسه كي يستقر نهائياً في قلب الأرض التي بلغ من شدة تعلقه بها أن اختارها مسرحاً للجانب الأكبر من مؤلفاته.
فقرية جوفر بريري التي اختارها سنكلير لويس مسرحاً لرواية "الشارع الرئيسي" لم تكن في الواقع سوى الصورة الحية لجميع البلدان المنتشرة في منطقة الولايات الوسطى... فهي القرية الحائرة بين الريف والحضر... التي جردها التطور من خصائص الحقل دون أن يمنحها خصائص المدينة، ففقدت عبير الزرع قبل أن تستنشق دخان المصنع، وخضعت لتقاليدَ زائفةٍ "يختنق فيها العالم الأصيل وينتعش المدَّعي ودجَّال السياسة"... شأنها في ذلك شأن المدينة التي تماثلها في العيوب والفضائل، ولا تختلف عنها إلا من حيث المساحة وعدد السكان... ففي الإثنين يتوافر التعصب والتزهُّد، والإستغلال والتحكم، وتسود سيطرة القوي على الضعيف، وينفسح المجال لإنتصار السطحية والتفاهة.
