كانت فكرتي عن نفسي هي أنني نضجت خلال تلك الفترة، وأن أفكاري تغيرت، وأنني حققت تقدِّماً أيضاً، لكن حين جمعت هذه الأوراق، كانت الأوراق كلها تقول جوهرياً الأمر نفسه – على مدى عقود.
فاكتشفت أمراً عن ذاك الشيء الذي كان يحرّكني، لم يكن لدي فكرة واضحة عن ماهيته حتى ميّزت تلك الإستمراريات التي تتخلل هذا الكتاب بأكمله، إن أربعة وعشرين عاماً هي فترة لا بأس بها من الوقت؛ الكثير قد حدث خلال تلك الفترة، وها أنا هناك أثرثر حول الشيء نفسه.
كنت قد انتقيت هذه المحاضرات كلها لأنها تقتفي أثر إكتشاف كامبل لفكرة الميثولوجيا بوصفها أداة لتعزيز النمو النفسي للفرد وفهمه – ما أسماه الوظيفة الرابعة أو النفسية للأسطورة، كانت فكرتي الأولى هي تقديم نظرة عامة تاريخية نوعاً ما لأفكار كامبل حول هذا الموضوع.
إلا أنني وجدت أن الأفكار التي كان يجادل فيها في نهاية فترة محاضرات كوبر يونيون والسلسلة الضخمة أقنعة اللهتنسجم صورة كبيرة مع الأفكار التي كان يتابع إستكشافها عند دنو أجله، وإن بأسلوب كثيف وغير متكلّف، مثل ورش العمل في معهد إسالين حيث كان يحتفل بعيد ميلاده كل عام.
إن جانباً من تفكيره قد نما – على سبيل المثال، أحاسيسه تجاه الوعد ومخاطر الإل إس دي بوصفه مدخلاً لإطلاق الصور الأسطورية للاوعي الجمعي – إلا أن الأطروحة الإجمالية بقيت على حالها.
لقد شعر أن الأسطورة قدّمت إطاراً للنمو والتحوّل الشخصين، وأن فهم الطرائق التي تؤثر من خلالها الأساطير والرموز على العقل الفردي يهيَّئ طريقة لعيش الفرد حياة تتوافق مع طبيعته – سبيلاً إلى النَّعيم.
