"القروش الخمسة".. هي اسم أول قصة قصيرة كتبتُها عام 1978 وكنتُ في السنة الأولى بكلية الهندسة جامعة القاهرة، وقد تقدمتُ بها في مسابقة للقصة القصيرة نظَّمتها إحدى الأُسر بالكلية... هي قصة عادية لا أدري كيف جاءتني فكرتها، ربما هذه الحياة البسيطة كنت أُحبُّ التعرف على ملامحها وأعيش في أشخاصها... القصة تحكي عن رجل موظف بسيط يعيش بمفرده في حجرة صغيرة ويتقاضى راتبه الشهري الذي يكفيه بالكاد، لكنه سعيد، فهذا الراتب يسدُّ حاجاته الرئيسية: مسكنه، مأكله، مركبه، كتابٌ يقرأه؛ كتابٌ واحد فقط كل شهر يقرأه على مهل لينتهي من صفحته الأخيرة مع أخر يوم في الشهر، وفي اليوم التالي يبدأ شهر جديد وراتب جديد وكتاب جديد... وذات يوم؛ وكان اليوم الأخير من الشهر لم يجد معه نقود تكفي ليستقل حافلة إلى بيته فقرَّر أن يعود إلى منزله سائرًا على قدميه.. وفي طريق عودته وجد قطعة معدنية ذات الخمسة قروش ملقاة على الأرض، تسقط على سطحها المعدني أشعة الشمس فينعكس بريقها في عينيه.. يقف أمامها منبهرًا بهذا البريق، ثم ينحني ليلتقطها من على الأرض ويمسح ما عليها من تراب وهو يفكِّر ماذا يفعل بها...
يدور حوار بين الرجل والقروش الخمسة، هو لا يدرى ماذا يفعل وهي تحاول أن تستجديه وتستعطفه ألا يتركها على الأرض، ثم راحت تفتح له أبوابًا كيف ينفقها، لكن كل باب تفتحه لا يستهوي الرجل فيغلقه عليها... حتى ينتهي الأمر بأن يعيد الرجل القطعة المعدنية إلى مكانها على الأرض مرة أخرى وهو يقول لها: "لستُ أنا يا سيدتي من تبحثين عنه.. أوقفني بريقك لحظات، لكنني لن أغيِّر طريقي"... ويتركها ويمضي. وتنتهي القصة.
