التنوع، والتفكيك، والتسييس هي السمات الثلاثة للتحوّل في السرديات المعاصرة، وسوف يكون واضحاً بالفعل أن المفردات الثلاث متضمَّنة بالتبادل، مكونةً ثالوثاً.
والتحوّل الذي تصفه تحولٌ في الإفتراضات العامة وإجراءات السرديات ما بعد البنيوية، وتختلف أهمية كل مفردة في أعمال محددة للسرديات والنظرية السردية، ولا يتطلّب الأمر أكثر من تصفّح في المكتبة لإثبات أن تحوّلاً قد طرأ في هذا الإتجاه.
إن الكتب التي نشرت قبل حوالي العام 1987 غالباً ما تستخدم كلمة "سرديات" في العنوان، وتضم فصولُها عناويناً مثل "الأحداث"، "التشخيص"، "الزمن"، و"التبئير"، إنها أشكال من النحو المجرد تفصح عن تبعيتها للسانيات في كل إنعطافة، في أسلوبها وقائمة مصطلحاتها، وينصب تركيزها على السرد الأدبي.
أما الدراسات التي أتت بعد ذلك التاريخ فتكون أكثر تداخلاً في الإختصاص، يصعبُ وضعها في رف من الرفوف للعثور عليها، إنها لا تستخدم اللاحقة – ology (علم) في عناوينها، مفضلةً نظرية السرد أو حتى السردية، وغالباً ما تربط مسألة السرد بمجموعات خاصة من الهوية (الجندر، العرق، والوطن)، أو أنماط بعينها من الخطاب.
إنها أقل تجريداً، وأقل علمية، وأكثر إلتزاماً من الناحية السياسية، وهي غالباً ما تبدأ بإعلان أن السرد موجود في كل مكان، وبأنه صيغة للتفكير والكينونة، وبأنه ليس مقصوراً على الأدب.
