"نُشر هذا الكتاب بالإنجليزية سنة 2005، وهو يضم واحدًا وسبعين فصلًا، وكل فصل يحتوي على عدد من الأساطير التي ما زال الأفارقة يتداولونها إلى اليوم عن نشأة ممالكهم أو أقوامهم أو قبائلهم أو مواشيهم أو مزروعاتهم أو كيف تعلموا هذه الحرفة أو تلك. وهذه الأساطير كانت بالأصل مَرْويّاتٍ شفويةً إلى أن بدأ الغربيون (من تجار ومستعمرين في البداية ثم إثنوغرافيين وأنثروبولوجيين لاحقًا) يحتكون بالأفارقة، فراحوا يُدوِّنون هذه المرويات. وفي الحقبة الاستعمارية وما بعدها راح الأفارقة أنفسهم يدونون هذه الأساطير بلغة المستعمرين التي فُرِضت عليهم، وذلك لحفظ تراثهم الشفوي الثري. ليست كل هذه الأساطير للتسلية وتزجية الوقت فقط، بل تشرح بأسلوب أسطوري كيف تشكَّل عالم الجماعات الإفريقية وبم تتمايز عن بعضها وكيف تأسست ثقافاتها: فهي إما كانت هبةً من الأرواح، أو من خلال مغامرةٍ عاثرةٍ أو صدفةٍ بحتةٍ، أو من الصراع والتنافس. ومع أن محتوى القصص معروفٌ لكل فردٍ في الجماعة عمومًا، لكن ليس كل فردٍ في الجماعة مُـخَوَّلًا برواية القصة، وهي ليست موضوعًا للسرد العادي ولا يجدر بتداولها إلا المختصون أصحاب المعرفة والصلاحية.
تمتد حكايات الكتاب على كامل التراب الإفريقي باستثناء البلاد العربية الإفريقية (ما عدا مصر الفرعونية). ولعل هذا الاستثناء راجعٌ لأن الإسلام والتدوين أحبطا إلى حدٍّ كبيرٍ رواجَ الأساطير التي تناقلها الأفارقة مشافهةً عن تاريخهم المتخيَّل، وإن كان بعض المسلمين الأفارقة قد نسجوا أساطير عن شخصياتٍ عربيةٍ أو إسلاميةٍ معروفةٍ، كما استعاروا حكاياتٍ من التراث التاريخي والقصصي العربي وسخّروها لأغراضهم. وقد أشار المترجم في قسم «الحواشي» إلى مواطن التشابه والاستعارة هذه.
