هذا الإرث الثقافي العظيم أنتج قصصاً وأساطير شعبية (فولكلورية) متميزة، ثم تناقلها شفاها من جيل غلى جيل على مر العصور، وقد يقوم كل جيل بإضافة أشياء جديدة أو حذف اشياء للتوافق مع واقع حياته التي يعايشها، وهذا الإبداع ليس من صنع فرد بعينه، بل تراث إنساني جماعي.
وقد قامت إي. أس. ستيفنز E. S. Stevens وهي عالمة بريطانية في الأنثروبولوجيا الثقافية بجمعه وتدوينه على مدى عقد من الزمان في الفترة (1921 إلى 1931) حين كانت تقيم في العراق.
وبذلت الكاتبة جهداً مضنياً في جمع هذا التراث من أفوّاه الرواة مباشرة بمقابلتها شخصيات متنوعة، من وزراء، وشيوخ قبائل، وناس بسطاء من الجنسين من خلال تجوالها بشتى أنحاء العراق، والقصص الشعبية العراقية تعج بأساطير الشياطين، والسحرة، والغيلان، وغيرها من المخلوقات الخارقة للطبيعة، وتعالج المشكلة الأبدية المتمثلة بالصراع بين الخير وبين الشر.
