تتحدث رواية «دكتور غلاس» عن حياة طبيب وحيد يعيش في ستوكهولم. وتتخذ الرواية شكل يوميات دوّنها ذلك الطبيب بين شهري يونيو وأكتوبر في بداية القرن العشرين. والهاجس الأساس لدى الطبيب تيكو غابرييل غلاس هو البحث عن فعل أو إنجاز كبير يُخرجه من حالة السأم وعدم الجدوى التي يعيشها. ثمّ يتطوّر ذلك الهاجس ليتحوّل إلى قرار بقتل أحد مرضاه، وهو القِسّ غريغوريوس الذي يشعر باشمئزاز منه وبغض شديد له. لكن بغضه للقِسّ غريغوريوس ليس السبب الوحيد الذي يدفع الطبيب غلاس إلى الرغبة في قتل القِسّ، بل يتعلق الأمر أيضاً بامرأة، وهي هيلغا زوجة القِسّ. وفي بدايات يومياته، يقول الطبيب محدثاً نفسه: «... وأشعر في هذه اللحظة كما لو أنني الشخص الأشدّ وحدة في هذا العالم. أنا، الدكتور تيكو غابرييل غلاس، الذي يساعد الآخرين أحياناً، لم أستطع أبداً مساعدة نفسي». لكن الفعل الذي يتوق غلاس إلى ارتكابه شديد الخطورة، لذا ينخرط في مراجعات وتقييمات لعواقب «الفعل» الذي يخطط لارتكابه، فيتنازعه صوتان أحدهما يحذره، في حين يشجعه الآخر ويحثه على الإقدام. وخلال حواراته الذاتية الطويلة، يتطرق غلاس إلى القيم الأخلاقية والمفاهيم الفلسفية والدينية والنظرة إلى الذات والعالم. لكن هل سيقتل الطبيب غلاس مريضه القِسّ غريغوريوس بالفعل؟
