هذا العمل محاولة للإفادة من معطيات علم اللغة بفروعه ومناهجه وإجراءاته في تحليل اللغة الأدبية التي تمثل المستوى الفني من مستويات الاستخدام اللغوي.
إذا كان هذا الميدان من ميادين الاشتغال باللغة قد صار غنيًا بباحثيه وبحوثه في الدراسات المعاصرة في أوربا وأمريكا، فقد عرفه تراثنا في صور مختلفة، حين اتخذ النحاة من لغة الشعر والقرآن الكريم والحديث النبوي الشريف (وهي كما يبدو لغات ذات طبيعة فنية على تفاوت بينها) وسيلة لاستخراج قواعد العربية والاستشهاد عليها، وحين اتخذ اللغويون تلك اللغات للكشف عن ظواهر اللغة وقضاياها ومسائلها النظرية.
ويختلف الأمر عند النقاد والبلاغيين: فقد دار البحث في اللغة الأدبية، لاسيما لغة الشعر، بين هاتين الطائفتين على أنها غاية.
وإذا كانت الدراسات المعاصرة في الغرب قد نهضت بالبحث في لغة الرواية نهضة كبرى، فإن الرواية العربية ما زالت تفتقر افتقارًا شديدًا إلى جهود اللغويين المحترفين في الكشف عن خصائص الاستخدام اللغوي في الرواية، وما يميزها عن الأجناس الأدبية الأخرى من هذه الناحية.
ومن هنا كان كتابنا هذا إضافة قيمة للبحث في هذا الأمر.
